Day 29 of the 30 day detox

WOW !!! This has been an interesting 29 days. I have done this detox about 5 times , now. Everytime I do it I learn something. I really got to see food differently this time.  For example – after swimming I am totally famished. Luckily, I generally fix enough salad for 3 days. So, when I get home I can just start eating something safe. I SWEAR that salad was SSOOOO good.  It was like eating my favorite Haagen Daz Coffee ice cream. For Real! I had to laugh about that. I was truly looking forward to a salad. I’ve heard other people  say that and could not imagine what the hell for. Now I know – real hunger.

It seems that I was hungry a lot on this detox. Not truly hungry, just agitated because I could not eat junky stuff. On the detox, besides a protein shake, one can eat most any vegetables , easy on the potatoes and rice.  One can have beans, peas and lentils but, go easy because they all turn to sugar – they are carbohydrates.  So, even after I have eaten some salmon and a salad with a piece of fruit for dessert, I am stalking the refrigerator still looking for something to eat. You remember how your kids would open the refrigerator door and just stand there looking inside like maybe they missed some secret food somewhere? You would tell them ” Don’t just stand there with the refrigerator door open. Close the damn refrigerator door and get the hell out of the kitchen!” EVERY night those were loving words my husband and myself say to each other.

I have learned to make better choices about food. It seems everytime I leave the house – I get hungry. Maybe it’s the fresh air or maybe because I didn’t have my protein shake before I left.  I don’t know but, it happens. I HAVE TO BE conscious of what I am going to eat – NOT just putting something  gratifying in my mouth. I have found “Kind” Bars very satisfying and will hold off hunger for a couple of hours. Be careful, tho.  Some of those Kind Bars are heavy in sugar and carbs. There are some very good tasting ones that are only 5 grams of sugars (I am not diabetic and don’t want to be).  I have given up all my fast food joints. As much as they make my taste buds dance. I have found a restaurant in Berkeley that claims they grow their own food ( not the meat, poultry nor fish) and that it is organic. It’s Bacheesos, on Telegraph near Derby St. It’s a buffet for only $15.00 – ALL YOU CAN EAT. Now you KNOW that makes a fat hungry person feel real good. OMG!!  I still cannot eat everything they offer but, they are some real good choices of food that I can eat.

So, if I take a Kind Bar and a bottle of water with me, I’m good for a couple of hours. One thing that I found to be really important and that is to eat often. Yeah, that’s TOTALLY against what all us fattys have been lead to believe. WE normally eat too much of all the wrong things and eat all the time. So, when we try to cut back we usually cut out some of our meals. Thus, creating some seemingly ass backwards phenomenon of our bodies holding onto our fat because the body goes into protective mode and thinks it’s starving. HAHAHAHAHA  a FAT body starving, really? What a flippin’ joke. Yeah, well the joke has been on me.  I’ve been going ’round in circles for years and still gaining weight, until now. This is a Homer Simpson moment – duh!

DAY 30 –

I made it. AND I am going to keep a rule that we, my husband and myself, agreed upon during the holidays – ONE dessert a week. If that dessert lasts 3 days, then I get to eat it for 3 days, BUT, when it’s gone, that’s it. I have to wait until that designated day (I chose Sundays) when I can introduce another dessert. That worked for me and it wasn’t hard. I managed to get a handle on that “sweet tooth” craving. Sweets begat more sweets but, knowing I can’t have anymore until a certain day makes me put discipline to work. I previously had stopped eating bread and will keep that up. I tried the gluten free bread and have not found but one that tastes like anything and that was on a Carnival ship. They have not carried that bread since, either. Damn them! I happen to like texture and taste. Most gluten free breads have good texture but no damn taste. So, for me, why bother? I cut out most snacking during the detox. There was a group of use doing this detox together and some ladies came up with all these creative “clean” and permissible snacks. I opted out. It’s just better for me to stick to 3 meals, teas, nuts and fresh fruits.  Not fancy. Not creative and it works for me.

I feel good that I completed this 30 days. I look forward to continuing to eat clean – limit processed foods, more vegetables, cut down saturated fats, reduce alcohol ingestion, less sweets in my diet, little to no salt, eat whole grain food (quinoa, oats and black rice – brown rice has too much gluten), eat less meat, more fresh fruits and stop eating refined grains – white flour products. I feel better and have lost a few pounds that I REFUSE to put back on. I will do this detox maybe 2 more times this year. Think about joining me. I’ll let you know when.

Oh, happy day.
