KWANZAA

December 26 – thru January 1st is Kwanzaa – a week long celebration of our African Heritage, unity and culture. Created by Maulana (aka Ron) Karenga in the 60’s. There are 7 principles of Kwanzaa (perhaps principles of life) as follows:

Day 1 – Umoja – Unity

Day 2 – Kujichagulia – self-determination,

Day 3 – Ujima – collective work and responsibility,

Day 4 -Ujamaa – cooperative economics,

Day 5- Nia – Purpose,

Day 6 – Kuumba – creativity,

Day 7 – Imani – faith

I have not participated in many of the events in years. However, I do try to attend the closing event – a feast. The event is hosted by  Minnie West and her family (the Bottoms and the Gums). People are encouraged to bring food to share. Minnie is THE Grande Dame. She and my mother were AKA’S together in grad school. Plus, Minnie lived around the corner from me. Minnie”s mother, Mrs. Bottom  and other family members used to baby sit me and my brother. So, I definitely want to go to the Imani Feast and re-unite with friends and neighbors from yesteryear, ole home week!. It brings  a warm and fuzzy feeling.

HAPPY KWANZAA  have a safe and healthy new year.
